British 'GM Food Revolution' Comes Under Fire

A vision of GM-heavy British farming outlined this week by the UK government's chief scientific adviser, Sir John Beddington, has been dismissed as unnecessary and potentially damaging by environmental groups and organic farmers.

Beddington claimed there was a need for "a new and greener revolution" to increase food production. He urged the use of genetic modification (GM) of crops and nanotechnology.

Academics, environment groups and others disagree, arguing that farmers were well able to feed the world without novel and untried technologies -- but to do so would require governments to operate in line with biological principles and not solely economic ones.

Lost Sleep Can Never Be Made Up

Staying in bed on the weekends won’t make up for a weeks' worth of sleep deprivation. A new study finds that going long periods without sleep can lead to a sort of "sleep debt" that cannot simply be undone with a extra sleep later.

Such chronic sleep loss may eventually interfere with a person's performance on tasks that require focus, becoming particularly noticeable at nighttime. This could be due to the effects of your natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm.

Your natural tendency to want to be awake during the day may mask signs of sleep debt when it's light out. But this protective effect may go away as darkness arrives.

Having Sex Twice A Week Reduces Chance of Heart Attack By Half

Men who have sex at least twice a week can almost halve their risk of heart disease, according to new research.

It shows men who indulge in regular lovemaking are up to 45 percent less likely to develop life-threatening heart conditions. The study, of over 1,000 men, did not examine whether women benefit too.

The researchers who carried out the investigation are calling for doctors to screen men for sexual activity when assessing their risk of heart disease.

Six Essential Oils That Suppress Dangerous Inflammation

Researchers have found that six essential oils can suppress the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme, in a manner similar to resveratrol, the chemical linked with the health benefits of red wine. They also identified that the chemical carvacrol was primarily responsible for this suppressive activity.

Essential oils from plants have long been a component of home remedies.

The six oils were:

 

  • Thyme
  • Clove
  • Rose
  • Eucalyptus
  • Fennel
  • Bergamot

Thyme oil proved the most active, reducing COX-2 levels by almost 75 percent.

Develop Your Greatest Skill -- Language

Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between people’s abilities with words and range of vocabulary and with success in their chosen fields. Most people depend on language for all sorts of tasks, but rarely take time to sharpen it.  Here are some ways you can do that.

Get a good dictionary and thesaurus

Two of the most loyal companions on your desk should be a dictionary and a thesaurus. Use the dictionary to learn the meanings and derivations of new words you encounter. The thesaurus is very helpful whenever you are writing and need an alternative to a word in order to avoid repetition or to achieve a variation in meaning.

Read

Reading the works of really good writers is one of the best ways to develop your abilities with words.

Capture new words

Whenever you bump into new words you should turn to the dictionary and spend a moment learning the meaning and derivation of the word.

Write, rewrite and edit

A good way to improve your writing is to read over what you have written and ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does what I have written express exactly what I mean?
  2. Will it be clear and comprehensible to the reader?
  3. Can I make it more concise or more accurate?

Play with Words

Adopt a playful attitude towards words and treat them as friends. Word games will increase your verbal dexterity and intelligence rating.

Listen to Yourself

In just the same way that you critically review your draft writing in order to sharpen it you should try to do the same with your speech. If it is possible try to view some video clips of yourself speaking. This is particularly useful it you are rehearsing for an important talk or presentation.
